The Money Question: How to Treat Bitcoin
By Kate Ackley, CQ Staff
“The distinction here between the Liberty Dollar and the bitcoin is that the bitcoin does not claim to be a currency that would supplant the U.S. dollar,” says Moy, who has had discussions with the Bitcoin Foundation and other players in the virtual currency world, but doesn’t have a financial stake in any of them.
Bitcoin, which was invented by a person or group that goes by the code name Satoshi Nakamoto, is the best known of the virtual currencies. Others include litecoin and peercoin.
Digital currencies, Moy says, have “gotten a lot of people thinking about what would happen if countries were no longer the sole arbiter of what constituted currency.”
